A mom’s protest, my protest.
We are what we eat and think.
1. Why this, why now?
This project for me is one of activism against everything that we have normalized, yet doesn’t really feel right. I feel society has been artificially inducing anxiety into babies, toddlers, kids, and adults through the foods we are sold, the habits that are enforced, and the generational paradigms that are imposed since childhood. I only realize this now after becoming a parent and learning that during my son’s first 7 years of life - I am:
1) Programming my son’s subconscious - developing a mental program that will impact him the rest of his life. From birth to age 5, scientific research has made clear that the quality of a child’s experiences in the first few years of life – positive or negative – helps shape how their brain develops. And that these experiences have lasting impact on their health and ability to learn and succeed in school and in life.
2) Feeding him food to grow his brain - 90% of a Child’s Brain Develops By Age 5 The human brain, the command center of the entire body, is the only organ not fully developed at birth. At birth, the average baby’s brain is about a quarter of the size of the average adult brain. Incredibly, it doubles in size in the first year and keeps growing to about 80% of adult size by age 3 and 90% – nearly full grown – by age 5.
2. What kind of community we want to build
Our mission is take care of our future generations and those who care for them today.
My intention is not just about starting a newsletter - it is about starting a community of parents - health activists, wellness warriors, and mindful yogis - who want to hack a better life for themselves and their children.
My hope is that through this project we are able to help humans of all ages feel better naturally through what we put in and on our bodies and evaluate the ways of living and doing things that perhaps need some tweaking to ensure the next generation and those who take care of them today thrives - because at the end of the day we are what we eat and think. ❤️
3. How often?
You can expect spontaneous posts around family (baby, kid, and parent) and general wellness.
4. Join us as we go down the rabbit hole
This is me and my son Matias - testing out our first formulations at Roothill Cafe - Park Slope, BK - September 2022.
5. How it started?
My name is Laura Facusse - I am an MIT wellness product developer, human design researcher, and biohacker. Ever since pregnant, I have spent the last 3 years hacking my son’s and my own health through food - what we eat and drink.
Most of the formulas I developed for myself were around regulating my mood and balancing my energy to avoid crashes and anxiety —> alternatives to coffee, alcohol, etc - as well cleanses and healing tonics to feel better naturally to support my body’s detox system, etc. Do we need more stressed - wired - anxious adults? No. We need peaceful, happy, mindful, and calm humans.
For my son, I started to notice how most food and beverages sold for babies and kids are not only filled with sugar - but caffeine such as chocolate. When I learned that 9.4% (5.8 million) children ages 3-7 years old suffer from diagnosed anxiety and depression- I was astounded - a 3yr with mental illness!… And what does this say about the parent’s mental health? What about the undiagnosed children?) Do we really need more anxious children? No. Therefore, I decided to create child-friendly beverages and foods that help fuel growth, but also balance mood.
